Is Modern American Farmhouse Dead?
Is Modern Farmhouse going out of style?
Yes and no, I think many developers and home renovators have overused some of the critical elements to death.
Many hacks are posted on Pinterest and Tik Tok, providing the "look for less" and overexposing us to this interior style.
The main antagonists are white Subway tiles with dark grout, shiplap, "white on white on white" kitchens, and industrial matte black light fixtures. Unfortunately, they are overplayed and used to carry the theme exclusively; they are a checklist on repeat for some of today's homebuyers.
The worst thing that can happen to a trend is over-exposure and the introduction of cheap imitations. We are there, folks. Cheap shiplap wall kits, self-stick subway tiles you can buy on Amazon, and people spray painting everything with matte black BBQ paint.
Can Modern American Farmhouse live on?
It just needs to be tempered with lots of natural elements (Black chalkboard paint doesn't count), and where it leans, vintage needs to stay authentic.
Run the opposite direction from Karen and her U-stick Subway tiles in her laundry room. The farmhouse is bright and airy but should move forward and have light woods and natural metal patina elements. In addition, it should have components of authenticity and depth; otherwise, the whole look looks cheap and "costumy." We don't need a sign in our kitchen to tell us to "EAT."
There is a place for this aesthetic moving forward, and I hope it falls into the hands of more creative tastemakers. However, I think the whole look needs to pay more mind to its "Modern" half of the title and where it leans farmhouse needs to do so respectfully and organically, or else the whole look is just going to look like a time capsule-like the Brady Bunch tv set.
